J.D. is a co-founder and partner at the law firm of Hartung and Schroeder. He started the firm with friend and colleague, Brad Schroeder, after working in both boutique and large, multi-state firms. J.D. works with entrepreneurs and family businesses on matters including corporate formation, contracts, disputes and employment matters.

When I decided to go to law school, I knew I wanted more than a paycheck. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of the people who chose me to represent them. That’s why I represent my clients with the same qualities I would look for in legal representation: honesty, knowledge and determination.

Brad is a co-founder and partner in the law firm Hartung Schroeder. He believes in advocating for people in many areas of the law. He regularly represents clients in matters pertaining to family law, business law and personal injury.

In addition to his general business practice, Brad handles complex civil litigation including shareholder lawsuits — one involving a publicly traded convenience store chain — and class action work. As class counsel in the largest class action lawsuit ever levied against an Iowa municipality, Brad and the legal team won a $40 million verdict in a case that survived three appeals to the Iowa Supreme Court and a writ for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He also has experience with Iowa’s racing and gaming laws, formerly serving as counsel to the Iowa Harness Horsemen’s Association in annual matters pertaining to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Association (IRGC) and Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino.

Brad is licensed to practice in all Iowa state courts as well as in the U.S. District Court Northern District of Iowa, the U.S. District Court Southern District of Iowa, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

  • Settlement of claims against the estate of a professional who defrauded clients out of millions of dollars.
  • Seven-figure recovery of damages against a national chain restaurant for premises negligence involving defective design and maintenance of seating areas.
  • Representation of a driver injured by the unsafe backing on a highway of a commercial truck driver caused by the negligent design of a business plant.
  • Recovery in a divorce case of more than a million dollars above the “last best offer” extended before HS involvement.
  • Six-figure recovery against a health insurer for mixing up prescriptions sent to a patient from its in-house mail-order fulfillment center.
  • Representation of a programmer and small business owner whose database management software was pirated by a competitor and marketed across the country.
  • Securing a $40,000,000 class action trial judgment against a city for illegal taxation of residents.
  • Securing court appointment of a receiver to oversee the operations of the parties’ business interests in a divorce where the husband was diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars in marital assets.
  • Representation of a rural business owner damaged when a large industrial hog confinement was constructed half a mile from his home.

Education

After growing up in the rural Iowa town of Remsen, Iowa, Brad attended Buena Vista College on a full academic scholarship. He studied English and served as president of the student senate. After earning a bachelor’s degree and graduating Cum Laude, he set his sights on law school at the University of Iowa. He graduated law school with distinction and was accepted into the Iowa Bar in 1997.

After three years of working at Crawford Law Firm he joined Hartung and Schroeder as an associate in 2007. Growing up the son of a college basketball coach, his early law career included work in racing and gaming, NCAA rules and regulations, professional sports and politics. At Hartung & Schroeder, he chose to take a different path with his law career. His caseload often includes matters pertaining to business, family law, civil litigation, criminal matters and mediation. Regardless of the type of case, he believes in helping clients find common ground as they work toward resolution.

In addition to general business law, Jon works with start-ups and new businesses on corporate structure and organization. He provides ongoing counsel to established businesses on a wide range of issues.

Jon attended the University of Kansas on an academic scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and English literature. He went on to graduate from Drake University Law School with high honors. He competed on Moot Court teams and worked on the Drake Law Review as the articles editor.

Laura was born and raised in North Liberty, Iowa. She graduated as valedictorian of Clear Creek Amana High School in 2000. In 2004, she graduated from the University of Iowa with High Distinction and Honors, earning a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. During her time at Iowa, Laurawas a scholarship athlete on the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s softball team and received Academic All-Big Ten and Academic All-American Honors. from Drake University in 1989, and law degree from Drake University Law School in 1992. Suzy
practiced law in Des Moines, Iowa for two years in healthcare law. Thereafter, she moved to
Chicago, Illinois where she was an associate of a large insurance law focused firm before being
recruited by the firm’s top insurance client to create and manage an in-house legal department.
Ms. Woollums then moved to Colorado, where she was recruited by a Fortune 500 company as
an associate general counsel gaining even more business knowledge and skills. Ms. Woollums
then relocated to Clearwater, Florida in 2005.

After having gone through a contentious divorce in Florida, Ms. Woollums dedicated her
practice exclusively to family law in order help others going through what she herself
experienced first-hand. With a compassionate and empathetic touch, Suzy can guide her
clients through one of life’s most challenging times while bringing them a message of hope and
healing.

Suzy recently relocated back to her beloved Iowa from Florida to be closer to family and to
enjoy the change of seasons.

Gene was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Washington Highschool in 2012. He went on to Luther College where he was the first at the school to enroll in the “3+3” program with Drake University Law School, allowing him to complete his undergraduate studies in 3 years. While at Luther, he was on the swim team and ultimate frisbee team. Gene received his law degree from Drake in 2015. While at Drake, Gene was in the Delta Theta Phi professional fraternity and worked at the Drake Legal Clinic, helping non-profits and local businesses. Gene initially went into the personal injury practice in Des Moines, soon transferring to family law where he has practiced ever since.
